2025 SYSU Research Summer Camp: “Let’s go Azheke”

01 Introduction
Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) is one of the top universities of China under the Ministry of Education. It is a key institution listed in the "985 Project," "211 Project," and "Double First-Class (A-Class)" initiative. The university operates a coordinated educational system across three campuses, offering a broad range of disciplines, including humanities, sciences, medicine, engineering, agriculture, and arts. With a distinguished faculty and rich teaching resources, SYSU has achieved outstanding accomplishments in teaching, research, and societal services.
The School of Tourism Management (STM) at Sun Yat-sen University was established in 2004 at the Zhuhai campus. In the 2024 ShanghaiRanking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects, STM ranked 1st in Chinese Mainland and 3rd globally. STM is equipped with national and provincial research platforms and collaborates with renowned tourist destinations and leading industry enterprises to establish teaching and practice bases. STM continuously promotes the integration of industry, academia, and research, contributing to the innovation and development of the global tourism industry by producing high-quality talent.
Since 2018, Professor Bao Jigang's team at the STM has developed a heritage conservation and sustainable tourism development plan for Azheke Village in the core area of the Honghe Hani Rice Terraces World Heritage site in Yunnan. They proposed the "Azheke Plan," which stations graduate students to help local villagers establish a collective tourism company, revitalize rural tourism, protect cultural heritage, and reshape cultural identity.

To better share the practical experience of the Azheke Plan, the School of Tourism Management of Sun Yat-sen University has offered an undergraduate internship course on the "Azheke Plan" since 2018. This course was designated as a first-class course at the university level in 2021 and was further recognized at the provincial first-class course in 2022. Since 2022, we have upgraded the course into a research summer camp.
This year, we have upgraded the summer camp into a bilingual (Chinese and English) teaching. Applications are open to teachers and students from global institutions that have cooperation framework agreements with Sun Yat-sen University. At the same time, international exchange students and overseas students studying at Sun Yat-sen University are also eligible to apply. We extend a warm welcome to all participants.
