UNESCO Chair on Sustainable Tourism in UNESCO Designated Sites
About the UNESCO Chair
- Launched in 1992 by UNESCO, the UNITWIN/UNESCO Chairs Programme promotes international inter-university collaboration and networking in key priority areas related to UNESCO’s competencies in education, natural and social sciences, culture and communication.
- The Chairs Programme aims to develop and promote academic exchanges and collaborations among universities around the world and to jointly support United Nations’ Sustainable Development Agenda 2030 through pooling of resources.
- The Chairs Programme is UNESCO’s most significant network and bridge in higher education, with related activities in the knowledge areas of training, research and information. Participants in this network are primarily higher-education institutions such as universities, university NGOs, related foundations and enterprises.
- To apply to the Chairs Programme, the university faculty’s academic accomplishments or training activities need to have demonstrated capacity for knowledge sharing and educational value. The faculty will need to apply for the position and to be recommended by its country’s National Education, Science and Culture Committee. After the evaluation and acceptance of the application, an agreement will be signed between UNESCO and the proposed university or scientific research institution. An academic leader from the faculty will then be appointed as the Chair Holder, a position responsible for the organization and implementation of related activities.
- The UNITWIN program encourages inter-university collaboration and networking and for participating institutions to form affiliated networks to carry out training, research and scholarly exchanges, thereby creating a platform for information sharing in thematic areas.
- As of 2021, the UNITWIN/UNESCO Chairs Programme has involved over 830 institutions in 110 countries.
